Super fit at 50 – New Hip gets 12 month ‘Ultra’ Approval!

Today, I visited Prof Alister Hart at the Cleveland Clinic London and received 12-month post-op sign-off on my recovery from hip replacement. I never thought this would have been possible pre-op and I am so happy 😊 This is also recognition that running the Pure Trail Race The Tides ultra has done absolutely no harm whatsoever to my new hip!

Indeed, Prof Hart said that I have a good range of motion and my x-rays are very satisfactory (one of the images is the photo here). I was fortunate to also see Sports Medicine Consultant Philip Batty who will help me to devise a plan to keep the hip replacement functioning as well as possible during and after these intense challenges we all aspire to participate and complete. So, I will keep you posted on progress!

One caveat is of course, there are no guarantees here and I do not want to undo the excellent work on the hip and my (to date) meticulous recovery, so I will continue with extensive cross training and will keep my weekly mileage down to the 20-30 range.

I am so excited to now be able to dream, plan and commit to a big event and will set my sights on something for 2023. In the meantime, I wish you all well with your running dreams and goals.

Take care

Andy
